Yes, I live in central New Jersey and yes, they've announced another snowstorm for tomorrow.
So I might get snowed in. In preparation I go to my trusted art store in the area: Jerry's Artarama in Lawrenceville.
If you're like me going to an art store is a treat...like walking in a candy store as a kid.
Your eyes start getting bigger as you look at all the possibilities of making art.
What's this? Oh a new brush cleaner that's non-toxic. Hmmm, I'll make a mental note of that. Oh, cool...some new gadgets for palette painting. I wonder if they're any good? Well, let's just take two of them for experimentation purposes.
The art store can be a wondrous thing, but it can also be overwhelming and intimidating if you don't know what you're looking for. Thank God that there are usually friendly and helpful people at the store who are more than willing to help you out.
I asked store manager, John O'Neill if he had any top items he would recommend for someone who is just beginning to draw and paint.
Suggested art supplies for the beginner:
1. RAFFINE GRAPHITE PENCIL SET 12 DEGREE SET IN TIN BOX ($ 7.99)
2. REFLEXIONS DOUBLE WIRE SKETCHBOOK ($ 10.49)
Here's Anna showing me this popular item!
3. LUKAS OIL PAINT
(prices vary, but it's still a very good deal. I'd get the Lukas Master Quality over the Lukas Studio Paint - more pigment power! But also be mindful of your budget.)
4. CANVAS BOARD
(Instead of stretched canvas)
If you're just beginning and messing around why invest in stretched canvas? Canvas board comes in all sorts of sizes, so try one out.
That's it for today. I could spend hours in an art store, but I can't because there's usually someone at home waiting for me to help them out with something. Bye Bye art store! I love you art store!
Yes, you're empowering me. Did I say I love you art store?
As I walk down the aisles to pay for my loot, I pass the children's section and the brush section. Good bye friends, till next time!
If you're in central NJ, check out Jerry's Artarama! The co-managers Lisa Thomas and John O'Neill love art and are just the nicest people. Say hi to them for me when you treat yourself to your next art store visit.
Find your local art store and schedule a trip over there. You will not regret it!
